Nizar Smaoui, MD is a Senior Director in the Human Genetics Group in the Genomics Research Center at Abbvie Pharmaceuticals, where he has been since 2018. From 2014 to 2018 he was a Senior Medical Director Pharmacogenomics at Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Before that, from 2007 to 2014, he was the Medical Director at GeneDx, a genetic company for rare disorders. Prior to that, from 2003-2007 he was the laboratory Director of the DNA diagnostic Laboratory at the National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, and from 2000-2003 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Eye Institute. From 1997 to 2000 he was an Assistant Professor at the Genetic Department Medical Faculty of Tunis, Charles Nicolle Hospital Tunis and from 1994 to 1997, he was a fellow at Genethon, France.
Dr. Smaoui, is a clinical geneticist, obtained his medical degree in 1994 from the Faculty of Medicine, Tunis, Tunisia, received a Master Diploma in Human Genetics in 1996 from the University Pierre et Marie Curie. Paris VI. France. Finally, in 2007 he received the Diploma of the American Board of Medical Genetics: Specialty Clinical Molecular Genetics.
Dr. Smaoui, has research interests in rare diseases and he has expertise in complex disorders in translational research and drug discovery, clinical drug development, clinical molecular diagnostics, human genetics, genomic medicine, and the use of real-world data in the context on drug discovery and clinical development. He has also expertise in the development of the in vitro diagnostic devices. Dr Smaoui has co-authored about 40 peer-reviewed publications.
